You’ll find Mongolia’s busy capital, Ulaanbaatar, nestled on the banks of the Tuul River in a valley surrounded by four mountains. The skyline here is a mix of Soviet-era architecture, Buddhist monasteries and modern buildings with traditional gers dotting the city limits and retaining the country’s nomadic heritage. The political, cultural and economic hub of Mongolia, all visits to the country invariably include a stop in Ulaanbaatar. While you may just be passing through, there are a collection of sights and activities to take in while you’re here.
At the city’s centre you’ll find Sukhbaatar Square, surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Government Palace and the statue of Chinggis Khan. Ulaanbaatar is a gateway to some of Mongolia’s most beautiful and striking natural landscapes. Just a short drive away you’ll discover Gorkhi-Terelj National Park which is home to diverse wildlife and scenic rock formations.
