At a glance

This trip ventures into the depths of South Australia – a vast state of epic outback scenes, a majestic sweep of coastline and boundless tracts of verdant vineyards, which contribute to more than half the production of all Australian wine.

There’s no better place to begin than in one of the most celebrated wine-producing regions, Barossa Valley. Situated northeast of Adelaide, this area is home to a selection of world-class wineries, with Shiraz grapes being the local wine farm’s forte.

You’ll then be taken further into the wilderness of Arkaba Conservancy, in the Flinders Ranges, the largest mountain range in South Australia. Spread across ancient landscapes, this wildlife haven seeks to conserve Australia’s endemic flora and fauna, including kangaroos and emus.

The following stop is Adelaide Hills, one of the cooler wine regions in Australia, positioned in the picturesque Mount Lofty Ranges. With the guidance of a local expert, you’ll be led to the nearby McLaren Vale region, to sample some of the area’s best wines.

Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third largest island, is the final destination of the trip, and features numerous nature reserves, teeming with native wildlife, such as koalas, wallabies, possums, sea lions, and a fur seal colony at Cape du Couedic. Your time here will be spent exploring Flinders Chase National Park, Lathami Conservation Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, and different corners of the island by car and on foot, stopping at viewpoints and for picnics of fresh produce, paired with fine Australian wines.

Flinders Chase Focus

Flinders Chase National Park is a vast wilderness covering the entire west end of the Island and is home to kangaroos, wallabies, possums, goannas, echidnas, koalas, platypus and many birds including rare Cape Barren Geese. First stop will be at Rocky River, the site of an impressive visitor centre interpreting many facets of the park and its history.

At Cape du Couedic visit a fur seal colony where over 20,000 animals can be observed at rest on the rocks or playing in the surf under Admirals Arch - a spectacular coastal grotto. On the headland above is a beautiful stone lighthouse where three light keepers and their families lived, maintaining a warning for ships. With no road access until 1940 life was tough - supplies came by sea only every three months.

Another impressive stone structure had a different architect. The Remarkable Rocks, huge natural granite sculptures, have been carved by relentless winds, rain and salt from the Southern Ocean - the end result looks like a meeting of the minds of Henry Moore and Salvador Dali

Good wines and local produce features in your picnic lunch which will be enjoyed in a pretty bush setting. Depending upon the day and the season, the afternoon might include a visit to Grassdale in the heart of Kelly Hill Conservation , the secluded pools of the Rocky River or a rugged South Coast cove.

Island life tour

The day is planned to suit the season but usually begins with a scenic drive in search for koalas feeding high in the eucalyptus trees. Eventually stop for a cuppa with some home-made cakes for morning tea then travel through some of the island’s best farming country to the North Coast and Lathami Conservation Park. Walk quietly through the bush with your guide, stopping to look at tracks and listening for birds. There are a huge number of Tammar wallabies here, a species almost extinct on the mainland, and there is a species of kangaroo endemic to Kangaroo Island.

Break for lunch and enjoy a delicious meal featuring local seafood, fresh salads and fine South Australian wines at a private bush location. At Seal Bay Conservation Park, with your guide will take you to walk among Australian sea lions on a beautiful sandy beach. Watch pups nursing, or playing in the surf, see old bulls bearing the scars of territorial disputes and learn about their unique breeding biology. The remainder of the afternoon is spent exploring more of the south-east region of the island with destinations and experiences chosen to reflect seasonal opportunities.
