At a glance

With direct flights from both Johannesburg and Nairobi, Madagascar makes for a compelling and destination for a post safari beach break, with so much more than warm oceans and pristine sand.

Anjajavy is one of our favourite spots on the island, a remote and fabulous reserve that contains a little bit of everything that makes Madagascar so fascinating – wild lemurs, fascinating local culture, fat baobabs, countless chameleons, abstract geology, turquoise waters and rich birdlife. Arriving into the capital, Antananarivo, spend a night in the city before flying to the coast.

The lodge itself, its villas strung out along a stretch of its own beach, is a Relais & Châteaux property and among the most luxurious places to stay in the country. It is also an inspiring example of sustainable tourism as the reserve protects some 7,200 hectares or sea, coral, forest, mangroves and savannah, while supporting and working closely with the local community.

During your four nights here, relax on the beach or gardens, perhaps getting up close to families of dancing sifaka, explore the sea by kayak or boat, hike in the forest, visit hidden caves, mountain bike and get an insight into life here with village visits and cultural tours.

Antananarivo

Madagascar’s capital and largest city, Antananarivo lies in the centre of the island. ‘Tana’, as it is affectionately known, is a unique place and where the country’s history and blend of Austronesian, Africa and European cultures are most apparent.

Glistening paddy fields and small farms stretch far out into the surrounding highlands and well into the city itself, hills packed densely with a ramshackle of buildings and ‘trano gasy’ brick houses piled on top. Causeways lead into the historic middle where classic French hatchbacks struggle up cobbled inclines, past markets, workshops, salons de coiffure, bouchers and food stalls. Atop the hills in the Haute-Ville, find quaint colonial villas (a handful of which are now charming boutique hotels), artisan shops and some surprisingly good restaurants.

Anjajavy Reserve

Accommodation in Anjajavy Reserve

Four nights in Anjajavy Reserve

The 7,200 hectare Anjajavy Reserve in the remote north-west of Madagascar is a protected area encompassing sea, coral reef, beaches, forest, mangrove, savannah, tumescent baobabs and jagged ‘Tsingy’ rock formations. Created by Anjajavy Lodge, which sits at the heart of the reserve, it is a beautiful microcosm of the island, it is classified by the WWF as a global priority in terms of conservation that harbours rare and endemic flora and fauna, as well as a scattering of traditional villages which the lodge works closely with and supports. On land, green forests are home to seven lemur species (including the elusive aye-aye), fossa, chameleons and a rich array of bird life. You'll most likely see the resident family of Coquerel's sifaka dancing through the garden. Tree roots meet the turquoise sea in a network of mangroves, a wonderful place to kayak, whose channels lead out to a marine park where tropical fish, turtles and occasional dolphin and humpback whale abound. Other activities here include nature walks, mountain biking, boat trips, community visits, snorkelling and wind surfing.
